Co-proprietors Barbara Banke and Jess Jackson, Hawkeye Mountain Estate
Risk taking is a family trait. It’s something
our family is known for. Taking risks takes courage.
Creating higher standards means you must allow
failure. The fact is, only family-owned wineries can
operate this way.
When my wife, Barbara, my family and I made
the decision to use only Jackson Estates Grown
grapes, it meant committing to fruit grown exclusively
in vineyards that use our precision farming practices.
A tremendous amount of risk and serious financial
implications were associated with this decision.
After implementing this new, even higher
commitment to quality, we found ourselves with fruit
that was not grown to our standards. We sold it to
our competitors. One could say our loss was their
gain. I prefer to see it as another step up in quality
for our wines.
Being family-owned means we can be more
involved. It also allows us to take the long view with
how we work with the earth and how we make our
wine. And we believe you can taste the difference.
I have heard that many of you enjoy the taste of our
wines but you aren’t sure why. My goal is to help
with A Taste of the Truth.
